    Island County Commissioner Phil Bakke has gotten the state’s attention with his recent letter that blasted the state Department of Transportation over traffic safety in Clinton. Paula Hammond, the state’s transportation secretary, has agreed to take a look at the issues and visit Clinton for herself in a few weeks.

    In August 2001, at the age of 21, Bewley joined the ranks of the Navy’s explosive ordnance disposal technicians as his father Ronald and brother J. Patrick witnessed his proud moment.

    But friends and family in Hector, a tiny town in central Arkansas, are now mourning the loss of Bewley. The sailor was killed in action on Nov. 8 in Salah ad Din province, Iraq; the sixth sailor assigned to Whidbey who had died in the war.

    OAK HARBOR — He had the go-get-’em gusto of a professional wrestler, set off by the wild whiskers of a mountain man or a rock-n-roll rebel like Elvis.

    A somber crowd of sailors from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island gave a tear-filled farewell Tuesday to Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Kevin Bewley at a memorial service in the Navy’s base movie theater.
