    GREENBANK — Neighbors of Rempel Brothers Concrete, Inc. are protesting the company’s proposed expansion of mining operations.

    Residents of the Wildwoodview Acres neighborhood south of Ledgewood Beach warn the proposed 100-acre gravel pit could contaminate the aquifer that supplies drinking water. They are also angry that Island County told nearby property owners about the proposal during a long holiday break, giving residents little time to respond to the company’s application for the pit.

    A 15-year-old Greenbank teen was hit by a car and killed while on her way home from Christmas shopping Saturday afternoon.

    Tonya Scriven, a sophomore at South Whidbey High School, was trying to walk across Highway 525 near Greenbank Farm when she was hit by a car driven by a Coupeville man.

    FREELAND — A fire that ignited in a garage raged through an adjacent Freeland home, destroying it and many of the homeowner’s possessions.

    The Dec. 19 fire also displaced the house’s owner, Don Binder, who is now living at a nearby hotel.

    FREELAND — It could be a long while before hikers can freely enjoy the beach again at South Whidbey State Park.

    Park officials said last week they don’t know when the beach will be reopened after a federal grant they thought would pay for repairs was spent on disaster relief in California. The closure will mark the second summer the popular stretch of sand along Admiralty Inlet will be closed.

    But it may not be enough to keep the popular leader of Bayview School in place. Mauk is deeply dissatisfied with the status quo in his role as teacher and director for the alternative school and said he still plans to step down from the director position.
