Editor,
On April 25 and 26, an eclectic group of people came together to help repair a corner of our island from the ravages of Scotch broom.
It was a glorious effort, sponsored by the Green Team of St. Hubert Catholic Church in partnership with Goosefoot, Whidbey Climate Action, and interested community members. Using the approach refined by the Broombusters on Vancouver Island, we cut broom in bloom in several locations in the Bayview area.
Many thanks to all who helped. To the 20 people who showed up and worked for hours. To Goosefoot, the Knights of Columbus Council at St. Hubert Church, to Whidbey Climate Action, to the Whidbey Hospital District, to Seth Luginbill of Island County. A big thank you to Henry Tree Service for helping us with the disposal.
So much generosity. So much concern for the common good. Thank you all!
As you walk or drive by the Bayview Park and Ride, notice the areas where there aren’t yellow flowers and broom stalks. Notice the open field up Meinhold where lots of broom used to be. Together, we took our first step toward a healthier ecosystem in our soils for our island and one another.
We’re coming back next year. Maybe you’d like to join us then.
Have a blessed and beautiful spring.
