Oscar Dwight Scudder “Scooter”: August 18, 1939 – July, 2025

Oscar Dwight Scudder, lovingly known as“Scooter,” went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 1, 2025. He was born on August 18, 1939, in Oklahoma to Oscar Scudder andDoris Mackenroth.

Scooter proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, where he developed the strength and discipline that carried him through life.

A talented musician and prolific songwriter, Scooter wrote more than 200 songs since he began his musical journey in 1953. In his youth, he toured with music legends Bobby Darin and Gene Vincent, performing across the Western United States. In 1988, he took his country rock band overseas, touring U.S. Air Force bases in Asia. It was during this chapter of his life that Scooter became a born-again Christian. From that point forward, he devoted his music to the Lord, writing many heartfelt Christian songs and playing for God alone, right up until his final day.

In 2002, Scooter settled on Whidbey Island, Washington, became a professional floor installer and later founded his own successful business, Scooter’s Floors, which he operated with pride and integrity for many years. He met and married the love of his life, Laura. The couple shared 20 beautiful Christ centered years together.

Scooter was the band leader for Celebrate Recovery for many years, offering his musical gifts in service to others. On the day he passed, he celebrated 40 years of sobriety—a powerful testament to his strength and faith.

Those who knew Scooter will remember him for his quick wit, thoughtful heart, and wise counsel. He had a way of touching lives deeply and serving faithfully. A gifted guitar player, songwriter, fisherman and devoted gardener, Scooter lived a life full of music, love, and purpose.

He will be missed more than words can say—but his music and spirit will live on in all of us.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, two brothers—Leon and Lloyd Scudder, his son-in-law David Bennett, granddaughter Ashley Hanson, and great-grandson Dawson Long.

He is survived by his beloved wife, his “Sweetheart” Laura Scudder; his brother Art Scudder and sister Ellen Trimble; five daughters—Denise Bennett, Bryce Long and husband Mike, Crystalynn Bone, Jill Bandrapalli, and Tara Armstrong and husband Rob Armstrong; and his son, Kevin Scudder and wife Brenda; and his two dogs, Jesse Lee and Winston. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and more beloved friends than could ever be counted.

From heaven, Scooter reminds us all with the words of a song he wrote:“If you ask for forgiveness, you can have joy in your heart.”

A Celebration of Life will be held at Christian Life Center August 21, 2025 at 10 am.
