Letter: Non-violent resistance is needed now

Editor,

I don’t have to tell you what your eyes and ears take in every day. Our elected President is running amok and the guard rails are gone. It started with pardoning the Jan. 6th convicted rioters and then snowballed. Telling the truth, due process, respect for others, forget about it. Trump could care less about the poor, veterans and the working people in this country.

Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy chief of staff, believes cartel gang members have invaded our country and taken over. Many inside the White House are evangelists for chaos. They believe that random disruptions and firings, labeled reducing government waste, is cheaper and faster than finding solutions for underlying problems. These folks are pushing their agenda of intolerance and spite into every corner of American life.

I can’t laugh anymore when late night hosts make fun of Trump. There’s nothing funny about him or his minions, but there is plenty they do that is rude, ignorant and objectionable. Trump is nervous about Wall Street but has slapped our Canadian and Mexican allies in the face. His on again/off again tariffs make no sense to economists and policy experts. He’s bullied universities, career government employees, and removed anyone he doesn’t like. He will back down, but only if they do what he asks. Don’t like someone? Call them a Marxist and claim that they are “woke,” whatever that is.

What can we do about this mess? We can take action that is neither violent nor illegal. Protest and resist the bullies. Insist on facts that we can verify. Call out the lies, point out the law-breaking, proclaim the values that most of us live by: honesty, fairness and treating people with courtesy and respect.

Decent Americans know a scammer, huckster and grifter when they see one.
