Rob Schouten Gallery in Langley presents newly released paintings from the estate of artist Alfredo Arreguín, on display until Sept. 1.

The opening reception runs 5-7 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 2. On Sunday, Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. there will be a poetry reading by Arreguín’s close friend, poet and author Tess Gallagher and others in the Sculpture Garden.

A renowned painter, Arreguín passed away in April of 2023 after a long and groundbreaking career. This exhibition is curated by his widow, artist Susan R. Lytle and gallery owner Rob Schouten, and consists of 15 paintings which were recently released from probate. These works were painted in the last two decades of Arreguín’s life.

Arreguín was born in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico and came to Seattle in 1956. He attended the University of Washington, graduating with a BFA in 1967, and a MFA in 1969.

Arreguín soon became an influential painter in the Seattle art scene. He is considered one of the founders of “Pattern Painting” along with artists like Chuck Close. His work is in the collections of the National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; the Mexican Museum, San Francisco; the Mexican Fine Art Center Museum, Chicago; the Seattle Art Museum and numerous other museums. Recent regional exhibitions include his 2018 Life Patterns Retrospective at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, and the 2022 exhibition Arreguín: Painter from the New World at the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner.
